Gas gauge wiring question 120-130

My gas gauge, after erratic behavior for several months, finally gave up the ghost a few weeks ago. I pulled the lead to the tank sensor, and the gauge pegged all the way to the "full" position, which my manual says confirms that the problem is with the tank sensor and not the gauge. So, I replaced the tank sensor.

With the new tank sensor, the gauge barely moved off of "empty." So, just to test how things were, I pulled the lead from the new tank sensor - the needle moved off slightly to the right, but nothing near how it was before - apparently indicating that the gauge is faulty.

I checked the wiring to the gauge, which I have not touched before. I saw three leads - a black wire on the bottom right, which I assume runs to the tank sensor; a red wire on the bottom left, which I assume is the positive lead, and a post in the upper middle of the gauge with no wire on it whatsoever. I couldn't spot any loose wire that would connect to the bare post.

The wiring diagram in my manual is somewhat cryptic, but seems to indicate that there is a positive lead, a ground, and then the single wire to the tank sensor. Is this right? If so, why was I getting erratic needle action before, and no action at all?

Can someone out there let me know what their wiring setup looks like? Or, if you have any ideas why my gauge would go bad over the course of a few days, please let me know!
