My 2 owner trusty 87 740 Turbo Wagon with 169000 miles on the original clutch with an M46 transmission needs serious work. It needs a new clutch fork. The current one still in the car is worn at the pivot point.
Other issues with the car are :
Will need a timing belt service and has a leaking water pump seal where it meets the head.
Metal in frame rail under drivers seat appears to be weak from rust even though it was rustproofed when new.
Engine wiring harness is now beginning to fall apart.
AC is broke and needs ro be upgraded to R134.
I have a hard time parting with it because it can go like hell and I and my son are in love with it. I had all new shocks and brakes and tires put in last year.
Question ::
Can a master tech tell me if the clutch fork can be replaced from outside with taking the tranny off. I have a quote of 1000 $ for a new clutch, pressure plate and a throwout bearing. If i were to go this route i would also replace the rear seal.
I would still keep this car if the expense is minimal by if we can replace the fork cheaply from the outside.
Appreciate any advice.
