Fuel gauge rarely works 900 1993

The fuel gauge on my 940 turbo wagon rarely works. Sometimes, when I am driving, I look over and there is the level. But I would say that it happens less than 5% of the time.
Any ideas? Is it a bad connection somewhere? Bad tank sender? Any experience and thoughts would be appreciated.
