Removed bolt, crank balancer won't come off.

In my attempt to change the timing belt on my 89 240 today I ran into a problem using the crank pulley holding tool from FCP Groton. The Tools hole thats supposed to fit over the timing belt tensioner stud was .25in too short and would not reach the stud. Ended up resting it against the water pump to remove bolt, anyone else have a problem using this tool? After removing the bolt I tried to lightly tap and pry to remove balancer but it would'nt budge. Thought About using a gear puller, but am afraid of damaging it.
Are balancers supposed to come off easily? Are they easily damaged? If this is the case should I replace the balancer as a precaution? I looked throughout the forum and in Bentley. Nothing is mentioned other than using the holding tool.
