house keeping question around a timing belt 900

Right smack in the middle of a head gasket change out and have just gotten to the part where I have pulled the Upper Timing Belt Cover.

Noticed that the cover had about a 6cm crack in it which allowed the area where the timing belt lives to become all crapped up with dirt.

My inclination is to spray a can of brake cleaner in there. Is this a good
idea?

Is filling the crack with a little silicone or duct tape a good idea or should I spend the $25 for a new cover?

Go ahead and get philosophical about it if you are so inclined.

As always- thank you kindly.
