backfire through air intake hose? 700

i have a 1989 740GL (B230F engine)
when i had the car (barely) running it seemed like it was backfiring through the air intake hose? it only did this when it was cold. i went to start it this morning and it would barely idle then die. it did this about 8 times then finally it would idle. if i tried to hit the gas it would immeditaly die. once the engine warms up it runs fine...a little rich but fine.

i'm clueless......any ideas?
