Brake failure light comes on 200 1981

On my '81 242, the brake failure light comes on. The pedal is soft but I am still able to stop the car. After pumping the brake pedal, the light goes off and the pedal is better temporarily. I plan to check the brake fluid reservoir and then bleed the brakes. What else should I consider?

Also what is the recommended brake fluid?
