93 245 surging & stalling 200 1993

Can someone give me an idea of what to check other than the AMM (please don't tell me its that, I can't afford a new one!). Our 93 245 has an intermittent stalling and surging problem. Usually stalls when engine is cold, but also happens sometimes when warm, usually when pulling out of a parking space for example. When it doesn't stall the engine also surges intermittently at idle.
