studding of regular tires? 200

So.... I was talking with somebody today who said that a shop in town could put studs on your regular road-tires if the tread is not too far gone. She said price was something like $45/each. Has anybody ever heard of this or had good or bad experiences with it? Am I better off searching out a decent shape used set? I just don't have the $400 plus it seems it would cost for a brand new set of studded tires.
