Ex Manifold heat shields 200 1991

Ok finishing up my exhaust system on my 91. There are two heat shields on the manifold. One is a plate and the other is the warm air nozzle for the air filter box. Both sheilds clamp together onto the manifold. Do I actually need them for anything other than the warm air for the filter box? Do they dissipate heat or protect something? I removed the hot air stat out of my filter box years ago so i do not use the hose.
