960 transmission shifting problem 900 1995

Dear Volvo brothers and sisters,

The gear selector on my 1995 964 will not go back into park and therefore will not start. It feels as though something is physically blocking the shifter from moving from reverse to park.

I have been having an issue with the gear selector and starting. At those times I have to move the gear selector rapidly back and forth through all the positions about 8 - 10 times before it will then start. The PNP switch is the likely culpirt here. But, I can't see how the PNP switch could effect the positioning of the shifter?

I hope to take a look under the car at the transmission tomorrow afternoon.

Any ideas what could be the cause?
