Coolant flush - am i asking for trouble? 200 1987

It's been about three years/30k miles since I've had a coolant flush and new thermostat. (Funny story. . .I was talking to two guys in my office about it this morning, and both thought I said "colon flush." That made for a few awkward moments.) I've got a 4 hour drive coming up this weekend, plus winter is on its way. What's the recommended interval for changing coolant/thermostat? I know I can test the effectiveness of the coolant, but is there another test I can run for corrosion protection?
