Check engine light /1990 240DL 200 1990

I started my car up this morning and after a few minutes it began to sputter as if it were going to die...this went on for another minute or so and soon after i noticed the check engine light came on. The car didn't die but seemed like it could at any moment....should I be worried? I didn't drive it for fear it may be something serious....could this be connected to the spark plugs or something....the car runs smooth otherwise. It's been cold and damp the last couple of day here in chicago would that effect anything?
