Temp Gauge swings and sways....! 200

HI again,
Today I noticed my temp gauge would erradically go from just below 9 "0" clock and then swing its way up to a little past 10 "0" clock. But never into the red. This mostly happened with my AC on. Coolant level is good and very clean as well.
I was reading that on post 86's the temp gauge really isn't too accurate anyhow. Something about a temp compensator board???
The gauge eventually dropped back down into the normal zone again without any problems with the vehicle. Its an 89' What should I be looking for? And whats the story with a temp compensator board?
Thanks again everyone.
