Rear Shocks & Springs or My Life in Hell 200 1989

It rained all morning so I didn't start working until 2pm. Three hours later it was getting dark and all I'd done was take out the driver's side rear shock.

I can't seem to get the special upper shock bolt off of the shock. I've soaked it with PB and wrenched the hell out of it and still, no dice. I'm thinking that tomorrow I'll just head to the hardware store and pick up a regular grade 8 bolt and fake a spacer by using 2" worth of washers.

Can anyone think of a reason why that wouldn't work?

Also, while searching the forums I read a post that said if you want to install overload springs in the rear you need the spring compressing tool. Is that true?
