240 5 spd difficult to shift 200

Yesteday, I test drove a 240 with 5 spd. manual tranny. Shifting into 1st and 2nd gears was anything bus slick. I had to really push hard to get it into 1st gear, and really pull quite hard to shift into 2nd. Would this be caused by a balky synchronizer, or by something binding in the shift linkage mechanism?
