Another 740 fuel pump question 700 1992

My 1992 740 is showing symtoms of fuel pump problems. I replaced the relay about 18 months ago and things have been fine. I went out Sunday and didn't get the intial pump run to pressurize the system. I figured it was the relay again but this time I can hear the relay click and could not get the pump to run after jumping terminals 30 and 87/2. This evening, I tried it again and heard a very labored pump noise. It eventually started and I drove it around. It ran fine and I could hear the pump at the filler neck.Shut it off and it will not restart. I have a new relay and fuel pump on the way. Is there something else I could do to to gain more confidence that it is indeed the pump? I've got the pump "exposed" and ready to start the removal but thought I'd check with you all before getting on the slippery slope. This has the Regina FI so just has the in tank pump.
