1990 740Turbo stalling out at 3500rpm 700

The check engine lite came on and all of a sudden the car starts to stall when I get to 3500RPM. Has no power on hills. I took the 016 Mass Airflow Sensor off and sprayed it off with carb cleaner. Engine lite went off but problem persists. Also blowing black smoke. Any thoughts on how to track the problem down. I'm not very familiar with drivabiliy components. I've been trying to use a chiltons manual but its almost worthless. Help!
