Transmission Selector Buttons/Arrow 900 1993

I have a 1993 960 Volvo with about 143K and started the car up yesterday and the transmission arrow is flashing and the "W" selector button does not stay down when you press it. Is this a trans problem or a matter of a bad switch?? If you press the "S" and "E" bottoms they do seem to work.
Thanks for any help with this in advance!!!
