740 Overdrive not Disengaging 700

Before I allow my college age son to take my cherished 1989 740 wagon to school, I must fix the O.D> disengage situation. The O.D. works fine, but has lost the ability to disengage itself when shifting out of 4th gear. The switch works fine, and I have gotten used to switching out when shifting, but knowing my son, I think it will be a matter of time before the O.D. unit is destroyed. Any help will be greatly apreciated. I have checked the relay, wiring diagrams(not much help there), and various manuals.
