ball bearings in rear axle

Hi, I am new here. It looks like i need to replace the rear axle bearings, (the noise it makes is horrible) I am hoping someone else has had a similar problem with the bearings. Was it an expensive job? I have a 1985 740 Turbo. Thanks for any help.
