M46 shifter knob removal 700 1986

My latest acquisition's overdrive didn't work when I got it. Now that I have finally gotten around to looking into it, I was thrilled that after I popped the little cover with the shift pattern off the top of the shifter, and then pried the overdrive botton out, I was able to get the dash to say 5 by putting a wire between the two wires for the switch. So switch is bad, right? No. If switch is put in carefully and touches the contacts, it trips and untrips the light too. (I sure will be disappointed if the overdrive itself still doesn't work when I actually drive it.)

But here's my question. I think the switch wasn't working because the spade connectors on it were not attached to the wires and don't see any way to connect them. They are down in the tunnel formed by the shifter knob with no slack to pull the wires out. I don't seem to be able to unscrew the knob, or pry it straight off, but I didn't try to hard so I don't break it. The FAQ desn't address removing the knob. So what's the trick?

Happy Thanksgiving All.
