Dead 240: fuel pump, filter or ??? 200

Hi. I'm sure somebody has had this problem. My '88 240 has been running great. Today it "burped" a few times and died about 5 minutes later. There was no strange noises or smells. The first thing I did was swapped relays and the fuse under the hood. After repeated attempts to start I couldn't smell the first whiff of gas. I assume that it's not getting fuel. I read my Bentley and it gives the most likely problem as a clogged fuel filter or a bad fuel pump. It's hard for me to believe that a fuel filter could get that bad. What sounds most likely? Is there something else I should look at? Thanks.
