Odd throttle noise

When I give the throttle a bit more gas--maybe depressing the pedal 1/2 inch--I hear this weird metallic grating sound. If I continue to press the gas further down to go faster, this noise disappears. It does not happen if I'm maintaining a constant speed. It does occur at any speed over about 30 mph, as far as I recall. Any ideas as to what the cause of this could be?
