rumble strip noise from back of car 200 1990

Driving home last night a noise that sounded like I ran over a rumble strip happened twice, each time the sound lasted five to ten seconds than stopped. When I got home I could smell something near the back tires. It was not anything I ran over.Is this sound helpful in finding out whats wrong? Thanks. 1990 240 sedan
