After reading all your comments about bench pressing a M41 and indian rope tricks I found another way that I thought I would share with you. With the objective of getting a flat platform under the tranny, I bought a couple of steel 'L' brackets (for shelves etc.) from the hardware and bolted them up to the tranny where the tranny mount goes so the "L" goes forward under the tranny. I then screwed a piece of 3/4 inch pine about 10 inches long and about the same width as the tranny to the brackets. I got a cheap trolley jack under all this and drilled a couple of holes in the wood so that I could tie the wood to the jack arm with some big cable ties. Secure each side so it can't rock. This kept the tranny from falling off the jack. With the car jacked up as high as possible on stands I rolled the tranny on the jack from the front under the engine and to a position below where it needs to be. I then just jacked it up until I could see that input shaft was about centre with the bellhousing and rolled the tranny forward. A bit of jiggling and in she went. No lifting or assistance required at all. This won't work with the bell housing on the tranny as it would be too high. I've done this same job on a hoist with a proper transmission jack and it was a lot harder.
