Why alum. wheels 200

I just bought a '93 240 that looks pretty standard but it has aluminum wheels, not steel ones. Prior to this one I had an '89 & a '90 240 but they both had standard steel wheels with the plastic wheel covers. Does anyone know if is these aluminum ones were an option or did the previous owner get them from an outside source? I've occasionally seen them before on tome 240s but not very many. Thanks.
