This week my left turn signal lights stay lit whether the stalk is in the 'OFF', 'RIGHT TURN', or 'LEFT TURN' positions. They do not flash. Chilton's Volvo 1990-98 Repair Manual says that 'the flasher is contained in the turn signal/windhshield wiper and washer switch' and to replace that. I replaced the turn signal/high beam switch but with no effect. The Volvo Service Manual Section 3 (Wiring Diagrams) shows turn signal flashers (left and right) as separate items (10/15 and 10/16) from the Turn Indicator Switch. It shows them on the circuit drawing, but nowhere in the manual does it locate them in the car (as it does for other components). I looked in the fuse/relay box in the engine compartment, and there is a relay for marker lights. I swapped this relay with the horn relay (same part #'s) and the horn continued to work, but the turn signal still didn't. I also checked the two left turn signal bulbs. Both filaments are good. The front bulb had slight corrosion on the side ground connection. I cleaned this up good with not effect.
I called our Volvo dealer's parts department and asked them where the relay was. The parts man told me that the relay was in a relay box under the ash tray. I asked if he had a replacement relay and he did. I picked it up tonight, and what he had was the dash-mounted 4-way flasher pushbutton assembly (maybe with some circuitry in it.) I installed it with no effect on the left turn signal.
If anyone can tell me where the left turn signal flasher is (and the right if possible) in a '97 960, I would greatly appreciate it. Has anyone had this problem and found a different solution than the one I think I'm looking for?
Thanks for your help, Roger Delthony.
