crankshaft pulley problems 200 1987

Hey there. My 87 240 has run into its first major promblem. It was losing coolant from what I belive was the weep-hole of the water-pump. Changed the pump and went to bed. The next morning I was driving to work in the very cold weather of Wisconsin, car was running fine until I put it into 5th. Then it just started bucking and going down hill fast. It kept running but acting very sick and had to keep dropping it down a gear to keep it running, then it just died. Towed it home and and started looking at stuff and found out the vibration dampener had seperated itself from the center section the "crankshaft pulley".
I have never seen this before so I cannot be sure of why it would do this. The auto parts store has a new crankshaft pulley in stock and before I buy the part is there something else major that would make it seperate?
Also I looked in my Hanyes book and the crankshaft pulley they show is not the same one on my 87 240. So I dont know how to pull the rest of it off the crank.
Thanx for any help thats out there.

Patrick.
