240 DIY stuff

I'm really new to working on cars. But I'm perpetually broke, I love my 240 and its got lots of stuff that needs attention.

I bought a bentley manual and have been reading in my spare time.

I know the air filter has been changed in a long time so I thought that would be a good easy place to start.
But, then again, It left me feeling a little.....for lack of a better word – dumb.
"release spring clips on housing and replace filter". is that all there is to it?

aye caramba.

What kind of projects are good stepping stones for someone who wants to start learning/fixing his 240? What tools, etc. are essential to have?

thanks!

-chris
