I've kept the original radio working for 17 years by cleaning the pesky balance/fade potentiometer every few years. I like the dash to look original.
This morning, however, I started the car to complete silence from the radio. LCD display works normally. Tuner seems to be working as the stereo indicator flickers on a weak FM station. No static, just silence.
I'll tear it out and look at it tomorrow, but before I start:
- The late model radios did not use an external amplifier, right?
- Is this a common failure mode? If so, is it fixable?
If I have to buy a new radio to put in there, perhaps I can convince my daughter that it is one of her Christmas presents. ;)
