Heater blower resistor - can blower motor drag cause it to fail? 700 1991

Hi everyone:

I wanted to see if anyone else has had an experience like this before...

A couple of months back I replaced the blower motor resistor on my '91 744 to cure the typical "no fan speeds except high" problem. I got the resistor from FCP Groton - it was about $65 IIRC. Problem solved - so it seemed.

Yesterday, I turned the blower on and I am back to the same problem - no speeds except for high! Is it possible that the fan motor is dragging causing the resistor to overheat and burn out? Is it possible that I got a poor/defective resistor that just didn't last? The one that came out looked original - not bad for 15 years and 162K+ miles.

I fear that I am looking at another new resistor as well as a new blower motor if that is what is causing them to fail. Not cheap if this is the case! Any thoughts are appreciated as always.

Thanks,

Andrew S.
