Fuel Gauge Failure 900 1996

The gauge indicated a problem when I filled the tank a few weeks ago and it only showed 1/4 full. After restarting the car a hour or so later, it went to the full reading and preformed fine until the next tank fill where it maxed out at 1/4 tank again. Ideas?
