these tiny vacuum lines... 700 1990

In my '90 740 turbo, there is a small diameter hose which connects between the intake manifold and the turbo CBV (relief) valve. There is a plastic T-connector in this hose which further leads the vacuum line (via the same type of thin hose) to some small device on the left side of the engine compartment, close to the power steering fluid tank.
Could anyone tell me what this last device does?

I have been spending sometime yesterday changing most of these tiny hoses.
They seemed to be just crumbling! I am sure there was not much vacuum about them for a while already...

Thanks in advance for all the comments,

Wolandir
