Overdrive wiring 200 1986

While the car is up all 4 tires on ramps(completed motor mounts, still have to do tranny mount), I want to fix the overdrive wiring - totally disconnected above the driveshaft. It looks really hard to get to - can I take out the plastic housing around the gearshift (automatic) to gain access? Ideas? Thanks.
