Gas in a diesel---what happens? 200

A friend has a Mercedes Turbo diesel. It suddenly started to run badly a few months ago and he parked it. He asked me to look at it, as I used to own one, and am familiar with how they are supposed to act. He started it up and it sounded really awful. What I am wondering is if anyone has experience with such a misfueling, what the engine runs like, and how quickly damage will occur.

While the car in question is a Mercedes, the subject is just as relevant to Volvo or any other diesel.

I have observed the reverse situation, and can tell you that a PV with SUs will not run on Diesel fuel.
