'96 960 Check engine light came on yesterday. 900

Yesterday as I did my usual acceleration run onto RT95 I first noticed a vibration which first made me think one of my tires lost a balance weight. Then I saw the check engine light start flashing. I let off on the throttle and the light stopped flashing but stayed on. I experimented a few times on my short 5 minute trip to work and was able to determine that the engine was misfiring under hard throttle but seemed OK at more normal power levels. In the parking lot at work the car idled normally. On the trip home the behavior was the same but my wife said there was a "gas smell" from the car when I pulled into the garage. (My old nose didn't detect it.) There was nothing wrong under the hood that I could see. Today the trip to work was the same as yesterday's trip home.

I've got an OBD-II code reader for my PC and will be checking things out this weekend. I'm thinking the most likely cause is a coil giving up? I have a spare coil but can anyone think of another part that would be good to have available given the described symptoms?
