Help!
My first try at a water pump , 1990 740 wagon, after fighting to get the bolts threaded into the head I tried as much as possible to hold it up against the head whilst tightening with an air ratchet.
I'vce read "lever the pump upwards" but where? With wha?
Anyway, got everything tightened up and started the engine, filling it up at idle with heater on, coolant is dripping out from the red heater pipe which exits the back of the pump at a decent 3 drops per second rate.
A slight wetness at the top rubber seal but most of it seems to be coming from the heater pipe.
I noticed the rubber seal FCP gave me isn't great shakes, its just a circle of rubber, no lip or anything, looks like it was cut from tubing. IS that right? I tightened the heater pipe to pump nut and bolt properly and tight but I can't see how a rubber ring can seal when theres no lip.
Did I miss something? Its gone dark now so I left it on the jackstands with a bucket under it.
Also the heater wasn't blowing hot air, thermostat needle was at 1/3rd.
Usually it would blow warm air at that point.
Should I use the old rubber seal as a backup behind the new one, it would press the new one against the pump seat.
Regards, Gerard
