tail shaft bushing 200 1990

I have trans (AW70) out of car to replace seals, bushings, gaskets and clean all gunk off etc. Removed rear flange then tail shaft housing, pulled out seal and used hacksaw method to remove old and well worn bushing. I had to get very physical to press new bushing in, now it looks like flange shaft will not go in bushing easily (if at all). I read in the 740/850 FAQ that the bushing should go in easily. Am I in trouble here, what went wrong?
