have a 1990 740 gle w/ twin cam. purchased in holland by a friend while he was in the army. bought the car 2 yrs ago. blance shaft broke while i was driving, this caused (i think) one of the gears on the timing side to shear it's bolt.
so i'm assuming the worse. that the valves are bent and the top half needs to be redone. that's not in the budget.
i ws told by 2 of the local volvo guru's when i bought the car that the engine could be problematic. one even said that when he gets them, he swaps out the 2 cam for a single cam engine.
well i have an 85 740 in the yard for parts. it's made donations to my 240 (rip) and the 90 in the past. engine was running when i bought it (50$ hard to say no)
i went ahead and pulled the motor from the older car and lo and behold it was a salvage motor. ink on it says "91 volvo 740". if that's true then gravey.
i'm now 1/2 way into pulling the motor out of the 90 gle. i noticed that there are a few difrences. i can get past the p/s pump, and the alternator.
but what's with the pipe coming of the exhast man for the 2cam? where is the o2 sensor? whet are the 3 sensors on the intake side of the engine ( 1 cam only has 2 on that side)?
is this a lost cause?
