The Nitty Gritty:
:: 1989 740 Turbo Wagon
:: Automatic Transmission
:: 187,000 miles
:: Purchased used at 185,000 miles
:: Driven regularly without incident
:: "Service Engine" light began illuminating when car was started, but would go out once car warmed up or was driven for approx. 1 mile.
:: When "Service Engine" light was on, engine performance was sluggish.
:: On a long trip, I made mention of how well it was running at 80mph
:: Car began sputtering, guages went erratic, and the car shut down
:: Could not get the car started again that day
:: Next day, car started perfectly, ran for 30 sec, sputtered, then shut down.
:: Would not start again for at least 3 hours
:: Towed car to Import Mechanic
--MECHANICS NOTES--
:: Wiring continuity & component testing of Bosch ignition system for no spark situation
:: Replaced Distributor, Distributor Cap & Ignition Rotor, Set Timing
:: Replaced Vibration Dampener on Crankshaft, Replaced A/C, Alternator & Power Steering Belts
--PAID FOR SERVICE & RETURNED HOME--
:: Car began doing the same thing on the way home, sputtering and such.
:: Called mechanic: recommended replacing coil
:: Replaced coil
:: No change in car behavior
:: Took car back to Import Mechanic
--MECHANICS NOTES--
:: Fuel system test : Leaking injectors
:: Replaced all fuel injectors
:: No change in behavior
:: As engine gets hotter, 5-6 miles of driving, engine starts missing
:: Changed out Ignition Module - no change
:: Checked Distributor Chassis Ground - no change
:: Changed out Plug Wires - no change
:: Changed out Air Flow Meter - no change
:: Cleaned battery cable ends - no change
:: Checked Intake Manifold Grounds - OK
:: Fuel Pressure OK
:: Fuel Regulator OK
:: Mechanic stumped on problem
--PICKED UP VEHICLE & TEST DROVE IT AGAIN--
:: Initially ran OK until turbo guage indicated turbo was on, then sputtered
:: Ran fine at low speeds and very slow acceleration
:: As car warmed up, sputtering became more frequent
:: Occasional sputtering when accellerating from a stop
:: Parked car for approx 20 min.
:: When car started, it stumbled & sputtered, but did not shut off.
:: Frequent sputtering, no power upon acceleration from stop
:: when car shifts into second, or around 20mph power returns.
:: shifting out of second requires acceleration, then removal of foot from gas.
:: still sputters in turbo range
:: engine stumbles and sputters every time when accelerating from stop
:: Turned car off, left it overnight (in the snow).
:: Starts fine in the morning, idles fine.
:: Increasing problems as car warms up.
My mechanic is stumped, I am stumped. I have put about $3000 into this car, and I really would like to drive it again!!!
