Ok everyone I have posted this before but it is an issue that is stumping me to all hell. This godawful sound is coming from the area near the timing belt cover on my 82 245 wagon. At first I thought it was a belt thing but no, then I thought it was the power stearing pump but no, then the ac pump but no. Now it could be the fan but the basic noise the best that I can describe it is "CHICKA CHICKA CHICKA CHICKA CHICKA" the thing is that it only does it once in a while and only when the car is cold during the first start of the day. Now I thought the water pump may be going out but it doesn't have more than 10,000 miles on it. Another thing is that I only have about a 5 mile drive to work and by about a mile from my house the noise is gone and when I get out to listen when I get to work it just sounds like normal.
My other thought is that it could be the timing belt tensioner going out and making it sound like a bearing taking a hike, its not valve clatter because I can't hear it above the head, plus it doesn't do it all the time. If anyone knows about this it would be great or if I should be really worried about it, im gonna have the timing belt and tensioner replaced soon, so if thats it I will update and let everyone know.
