Parking Brake Repair Question 900 1993

Hello all,

The parking brake cables on my 944 are broken on both sides. Looking under the car, I have nice clean cable coming out of each wheel and along the axle, but then I see frayed rusted ends on each side right near the diff, where the cables are still parallel to the axle. If I understand the FAQ correctly, the left side cable is one long, continuous piece from the wheel up through to the hand lever, and the right side cable is shorter and goes from that wheel to a connection point on the long cable near the differential somewhere, where they then make a 90-degree turn and head up front?

My question is, do I have to take the wheels off and brakes apart to replace these cables, or can it be done from underneath by just jacking up the rear end? Also, am I better off at the junkyard or at NAPA for getting new cables? I assume the dealer sells them as well (for ten times their actual value) as a last resort? Any tips beyond what's in the FAQ would be appreciated...thanks in advance.
