Do I *need* a control module? 900 1994

HELP A NOOB! I couldn't find the info I need in the FAQs, so here goes: I've got a 940 wagon (with turbo) and recently it's been dying for no reason. It starts back up after a few attempts, but the dying is a problem on the freeway.

Long story short, the dealer says the main problem is the control module (what they called the "brain") and they quoted $2500 to replace it. I found the part online for cheaper, and my own mechanic could do it for cheaper than the dealer, but it would still cost more than $1000, which is more than we can comfortably afford.

What can I expect (beyond the continued aforementioned problem) will happen if we do NOT replace it? Is this an option?
