The belts were squealing on my 1985 240. I tightened them up a little today and now the engine will turn over, but not start. It is getting fuel because I can smell it when I crank the engine. All I did was adjust the belt tension to within spec, but I did have some trouble getting to the lower alternator bolt. I did not disconnect the battery, so is it possible I might have caused a short with the tools while working around the alternator? I never saw any sparks or anything. Would a bad alternator keep the engine from starting?
I've checked all connections on the alternator and they seem to be fine. I also checked all fuses both in the fuse panel and engine compartment, and none were blown. Before anyone suggests the bad engine wiring harness problem, I replaced it several years ago with a brand new one from Volvo. Any ideas where to start looking? I plan to take off the alternator and have it tested, but I wanted to post here first before doing that.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated....!
Thanks!
