replacing tie rod innner and outer 900

1993(or maybe 94) 940 154k miles
Sheesh, teenagers. Now she comes home with, " I was just going around a corner and heard a pop and the steering wheel isn't straight"
No impact, just driving along.
Get under the car and the right inner tie rod is seriously bent forward. No visible trauma. It's as if someone tied a tow rope to it and pulled forward.
So the tie rod needs replaced. the tie rod end has a cracked boot. No leakage from the large boot over the tie rod itself. (see the image - I hope it worked)
I looked at the FAQ and the cheezy Clymers manual and need some help. Is this as straight forward as it looks to be? How does the tie rod end go into the steering box? Can i get away with just one side or do i have to do both? Looking at the VLVworld site: http://www.vlvworld.com/indexframe.html I have the CAM type.

PS Do these fail just by themselves? The tie rod is a good stiff piece of solid steel and I just can't imagine that kind of failure. With the car off the ground the wheels turn easy. Again, no visible trauma.
