740 sedan boot lock - Annoying!! 700 1990

The boot lock on my folks 1990 740 sedan has an annoying habit. The button will release the bootlid 2 or maybe 3 times and then it seems to lock itself and the key is needed to unlock it before one can open the boot. It's been doing this for as long as I can remember. Is it just a case of adjustment? Could the lock be worn out? Thanks for any help
