massive overheat and coolant loss 700 1990

I am posting this as a result of a phone call, so please feel free to add questions I may have forgotten to ask. I am somewhat familiar with the 240, but not so much with the 740, and have not run into this type of problem in the past.

The car is a 1990 740 16 valve wagon.

Car's check engine light came on a couple days ago, but wasn't able to find anyone who could check the codes. Continued to drive the car.

Earlier today, ran about 10 miles, then idled 10-15 minutes while away from the vehicle. Came back to temp gauge in the red zone. Shut car off, and then had steam coming out both sides of the hood. Opened the hood, and saw (?) antifreeze in the compartment. Added antifreeze, but it didn't accept a lot.

Stopping frequently to let it cool off, drove it 10 miles home, because driver had been able to get other make of car home with this problem. Maxed out the temp gauge on at least one occasion.

At original idle spot, may have had antifreeze on the ground at the rear of the engine? But aren't going back to check!

Antifreeze in reservoir did not continue to diminish.

What other questions do I need to ask, and does anyone have any idea what kind of damage might be done. I've told the driver he is without a driveable vehicle for the moment, as in do NOT drive it ANYWHERE!

Thanks for any help!
