Fan loosening on water pump extension 140-160 1973

Most of my experience with Volvos has been with models that did not have a
fan clutch. The fan bolted on, along with the pulley, with 4 bolts to the
water pump hub, and all of them had to come loose to result in devastation.
The Yellow Peril, a 1973 145E, has a fan clutch, mounted on an extension that
in turn mounts to the water pump shaft along with the pulley. There seem to
be two different kinds of extensions, one that has dogs that hold the two halves
from turning with respect to each other, and one that is more like a split spool,
with no dogs. The one on the Yellow Peril is the latter type, no dogs, so the
front portion of the spool is only kept from relative motion with the rear mount
by the tightness of the bolt, a fairly long 3/8"-16 UNC bolt with a 9/16" hex
head.

Ben drove the car for quite a while with no apparent problem in THIS area,
however lately it has become loose and noisy several times, once impacting the
radiator, curling the edge of one aluminum fan blade and putting a SMALL nick
in one coil, which now seeps coolant. I have tightened the bolt several times
to a degree that I felt was adequate tightness (we held the belt very tight
while I tightened it, so that it was turning the engine some and the rear wheels). Nonetheless after a few miles' driving it still came loose. I was
not eager to do this but I purchased a tube of Loctite and put it together
again, and so far as I know it has stayed. At least I have not heard any more
from Ben.

Have any of you had this problem? How did you deal with it? Should I put on
one of the hubs that has the two halves of the spool dogged together? There
may be one in the culch heap.
