1994 940 wagon
The right side wiper failed peacefully. Under the cowl plate I discovered that the cable had broken not at the pulley end where expected, but closer to the motor where it does not flex. Inspection showed the cause to be corrosion, from dirty water siting in the channel-shaped pushrod. Next time you have your cowl plate off, give that cable a shot of anti-rust grease or chain saw oil where it sits in the pushrod.
I learned that there are two possible wiper systems. I didn't know which I had since the car was 1,500 km away, so I ordered both cables. As far as I can tell, they are actually identical so it may be a good risk to just order the cheaper one if this happens to you.
I hope this helps somebody
